LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bison men's (2-1) and women's (0-2) tennis teams head into the weekend with a very busy schedule. Both teams will play Niagara on Friday at 5 p.m. and St. Bonaventure on Saturday at 3 p.m. The women will round out the weekend Sunday against Duquesne at 11 a.m. All matches will be played in Olean, N.Y., at the St. Bonaventure Indoor Tennis Courts.
In their last match the men garnered a 6-1 win over Hofstra (1-1), while the women's team was handed their second loss in a row by the Pride (3-3).
The men's team has had some recent good fortune against Niagara (0-2) and St. Bonaventure (0-5) beating both teams last year by scores of 5-2 and 6-1.
Returning players Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School), Evan Zimmer (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex), Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Kyle Rosen (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) all earned singles victories when Bucknell and Niagara met last spring. The four Bison players are also coming off of individual wins in their last match against Hofstra and look to keep the momentum rolling into this upcoming weekend.
On the women's side the Bison look to earn their first win of the year against Niagara (2-0). Two years ago when the women took on the Purple Eagles they ended the match with a 7-0 victory.
As for their other matches over the weekend, the Bucknell women's team will face a St. Bonaventure team entering the match at 3-3 and a Duquesne squad that is 4-6 on the season.
Several of the Bison women have played in promising matches up to this point in time, with freshman Jen Bush (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and senior Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) each earning singles victories so far this season.
Senior captain Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) still needs two wins to move into a tie for No.25 on Bucknell's all-time victories. Her current record is 57-59 which ranks her at No.26.
Coach Rebecca Helt is also on the verge of two Bucknell tennis marks. She is two matches shy of her 200th as head coach of the Bison men's team. Helt is currently third in men's matches coached team at 198. Next on the rankings for career matches is Hank Peters at 234. She will also tie Rose Ewan for first in Bucknell history in number of women's tennis matches coached Friday vs. Niagara. That record is currently set at 294 matches coached.
Both the men's and women's tennis teams will be playing six matches over spring break at neutral sites in Orlando, Fla. Dates, times and opponents are available on our website, but as of now locations have not been determined.
