LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team had eight squad members named to the All-Patriot League Team, the league office announced on Wednesday. The Bison's eight selections ranked second in the league behind only champion Navy, which had 18 honorees. Bucknell and the Mids dominated the first team with Navy garnering 13 of the 20 spots and the Bison an additional four.
Among Bucknell's eight honorees were six repeat selections from previous years. The eight selections have now combined for 20 career All-Patriot League certificates.
Senior Thomas Brown (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), sophomore Mike Nicholson (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley), senior Matthew Segar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and junior Christian Treat Evergreen, Colo./Clear Creek) were the Bison's four first-team honorees, while senior Taylor Harris (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central), freshman Erik Heinemann (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), junior Billy Krause (Huntington Bay, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and senior Eric Sokolosky (Branford, Conn./Branford) landed on the second team.
Brown, Krause, Segar and Treat each made their third career appearances on the All-Patriot League Team, while Nicholson is on it for a second consecutive season. Sokolosky, a first-team choice in 2010 and 2011, has been honored in each of his four years, making him the first Bison to accomplish that feat since Luke Trafton from 2007 to 2010.
Each of the All-Patriot League teams is comprised of 18 student-athletes, although this year's first team has 20 and the second team 19 due to ties. First-team status is automatically awarded to competitors who earn a first-place finish at the championship meet. The remaining first-team slots are filled by student-athletes with the highest remaining individual point totals from the meet. Second-team status is automatically given to all second-place finishers who do not otherwise have enough points to move up to the first team. The remaining second-team slots are then filled by competitors with the highest remaining point totals.
Just a sophomore, Nicholson added to his already long list of accomplishments by tying Treat for the team lead in points scored at the championship meet with 47. Nicholson finished second in the 200 IM, second in the 400 IM and sixth in the 200 fly, giving him four career top-three showings at the Patriot League Championships in just two years. Already the school record holder in all three events, Nicholson set a season-best time in the 200 IM (1:50.11) as he earned his second consecutive first-team honor.
Treat matched Nicholson with two runner-up showings (100 breast, 200 breast) and a sixth-place finish (200 IM) as he moved up to the first team after a pair of second-team citations. Treat, who ranks in the top 10 in school history in four events, now has nine career top-10 showings at the Patriot League Championships.
Like Treat, Brown made the jump up to the first team after a pair of second-team honors. He was his usual steady self this past weekend as he posted fourth-place finishes in both the 100 and 200 back and a seventh-place showing in the 200 IM. The senior recorded season-best times in all three events as he listed 16th in the league in points scored (42).
Segar was four spots ahead of Brown with 45 points scored during the championship meet. After two second-team certificates, Segar earned his first career first-team honor thanks to three top-five finishes in freestyle events. He placed third in the 200 free, fourth in the 500 free and fifth in the 1,650 free. He missed his own school record in the 200 free by .06 seconds and he recorded a personal-best 15:57.42 in the 1,650 free. Segar concludes his Patriot League career with nine top-seven finishes at the league meet.
Sokolosky headlined the quartet of Bison second-team honorees as he piled up 40 points last weekend after a fourth-place finish in the 100 free, a sixth-place listing in the 200 free and a seventh-place showing in the 50 free. The 2010 Patriot League Champion in the 50 free, Sokolosky will graduate with seven career top-five finishes at the Patriot League Championships.
Harris earned his first career Patriot League honor in his final chance. He advanced to the "A" final of both the 100 fly and 100 back, finishing sixth and fifth, respectively. The Michigan native also touched the wall 11th in the 50 free. He set new program top-10 times in each event this past weekend.
A second-team honoree each of the last two years, Krause has finished in the top 10 in eight of his nine career Patriot League races, including two this year. He placed fifth in the 400 IM and ninth in the 200 fly, in addition to an 11th-place showing in the 200 IM. His finals times in each event were season bests.
The only Bison rookie to be named All-Patriot League, Heinemann earned the honor thanks to three top-10 finishes. He was sixth in the 400 IM, seventh in the 200 fly and ninth in the 500 free. Heinemann's prelim time of 1:50.23 in the 200 fly ranks him second in school history on that list, while his 500 free time of 4:32.75 is fourth in program history.
Brown (400 free relay, 800 free relay, 400 medley relay), Harris (200 free relay, 200 medley relay), Segar (800 free relay), Sokolosky (400 free relay, 800 free relay, 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay), Treat (200 free relay, 400 free relay, 800 free relay, 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay) also helped the Bison to tremendous success in the relays at the Patriot League Championships. Five new program top-10 marks were set, in addition to three second-place finishes and one third-place medal.
While the Patriot League Championships are now complete, the season does not end for the Bison, who finished second in the team standings for the fourth time in five years. A number of Bucknell swimmers will be competing at this weekend's ECAC Championships, which will take place back at Navy, the site of this past weekend's conference meet. The event starts Thursday with the ECAC Long Course Invite and continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the traditional ECAC Championships.
