LEWISBURG, Pa. –Taylor Barnett (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake) scored three goals and Amanda Skonezeny (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) chipped in two, but the Bucknell women's water polo team could not overcome a six-goal first quarter by No. 16 Hartwick as the Bison lost to the Hawks 15-9 Sunday evening in Kinney Natatorium to conclude the Bison Invitational. Bucknell posted a 1-3 record during the weekend, which featured a total of 16 games played by eight different teams.
Hartwick (9-3) tallied the first two goals and led 6-1 less than seven minutes in and the Bison never drew closer than three goals the rest of the way. The Hawks were led by Jemma Dendy Young, who scored three of her game-high five goals in the first quarter. Lisa Bass added four goals, including three in the second half.
Barnett, who tallied a team-high 11 goals in the four games this weekend, also had one steal and two ejections drawn vs. Hartwick. Skonezney leads the squad with 16 goals on the season, two ahead of second-place Barnett.
Julianne Valdes (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep), Becca Shopiro (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson), Hallie Kennan (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and Krystle Morgan (Rowland Heights, Calif./Rosary) added a goal apiece to round out the scoring for Bucknell (3-5). Kennan dished out a team-high three assists, upping her season total to 13. She moved past Elizabeth Jensen this weekend and into 10th place on the Bison all-time goals list with 136.
Bucknell converted 6 of 11 six-on-five opportunities, while Hartwick was 6-for-10. Skonezney netted a five-meter penalty shot, while the Hawks scored on both of their penalty shots.
Rena Heim (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) registered seven saves in goal against Hartwick, the same number she recorded in a tight 9-8 loss to Wagner earlier in the day. She now has a team-high 32 stops on the year.
After playing four games each of its first two weekends, Bucknell has a five-game slate lined up for next weekend. The Bison will play a conference game at Princeton on Friday, Feb. 24, at 8 p.m. They will then play four MAAC opponents the following two days as part of the CWPA/MAAC Crossover at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.
