ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team earned its fourth second-place showing in five years at the Patriot League Championships Saturday at Navy's Lejeune Hall. The Bison were behind only nine-time champion Navy and they finished one spot ahead of Army. Bucknell has not finished outside the top three at the Patriot League Championships since 2005.
Eight new program top-10 marks were set Saturday, including the second-best time in school history in the 200-yard breaststroke by Christian Treat. Treat, who earned his second silver medal this meet after placing second in the 100 breast on Friday, was nearly one second ahead of third-place Ben Grove with a time of 2 minutes, 2.37 seconds. That was .81 seconds faster than his previous best entering the day.
The 200 breast was the deepest event of the day for the Bison as Treat was one of four Bucknell scorers. He was joined by Ben Seketa (6th), Nathaniel Frye (8th) and Matthew Stevens (11th). Seketa's prelim time of 2:04.37 ranks seventh on the all-time list.
Like Treat, freshman Erik Heinemann etched his name second in the Bucknell record books, but in the 200 fly. His prelim time of 1:50.23 is second only to teammate Mike Nicholson's 1:48.57 that was set at this year's Bison Invitational. Heinemann finished three spots ahead of Nicholson in the 200 fly prelims on Friday, but Nicholson edged him out for sixth in the finals as the rookie had to settle for seventh, his third top-10 finish of the meet.
Outside of Treat's second-place finish in the 200 breast, Eric Sokolosky (100 free) and Thomas Brown (200 back) posted Bucknell's top individual finishes Saturday. Both seniors finished fourth in their respective events. Sokolosky finished the meet with three top-seven showings, while Brown earned two fourths and a seventh.
Matthew Segar led a strong Bison contingent in the 1,650 free as he recorded the fourth-best time in program history in the event (15:57.42) to finish fifth in the 22-swimmer field. He touched the wall one spot and .08 seconds ahead of teammate George Beatty. Both Segar and Beatty also posted top-10 program times for their 1,000 split. Collin Greene and Matt Ramey also placed in the top 13 in the 1,650 free.
The meet concluded with the 400 free relay and the Bison quartet of Taylor Harris, Trevor Reitz, Brown and Sokolosky finished third, but posted the second-best time in school history (3:01.68).
Select Bucknell swimmers will continue competition next weekend at the ECAC Championships, which will also be held at Navy.
