LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's (1-1) and women's (0-1) tennis teams look to bounce-back from recent losses in their last matches. Both teams will take on Hofstra tomorrow at noon in Quakertown, Pa.
Coming into Saturday's match-up the men's team is seeking a robust win over Hofstra, which will be playing for the first time in the 2012 season.
The men's team looks to improve on its all-time record of 8-2 against Hofstra. The last time these two teams met was back in the spring of 2010 in a match that the Bison took 7-0.
In their last bout the men played Penn State (6-2), which the Bison lost 7-0. In that match Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) earned his third win of the season in a No. 1 doubles match with partner Evan Zimmer (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex), which placed him into the top-10 all-time on Bucknell's victories at 99-91.
Freshman Octavio Canibe (Spring, Texas/The John Cooper School) is 1-1 in singles matches on the season and is looking to rebound from a hard-hitting loss against Penn State player Tomas Hanzik, the No. 80 player in the ITA rankings, 6-2, 6-0.
On the women's side, the Bison enter the match seeking to find their form after a two-week layoff. They will face a Hofstra team (1-3) entering the match with back-to-back losses, the most recent against Fairfield University 4-3.
The women's last match against Saint Francis (Pa.) was postponed due to inclement weather and will be played March 2. Previously, their opening match of the season was a 7-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Panthers (4-3) on Feb. 4.
In the spring of 2010 when Bucknell and Hofstra met last, the Bison cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Pride. Then-sophomore Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) won both her matches on that day.
Senior captain Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) needs just two wins overall to move into a tie for No. 25 on Bucknell's all-time victories. She currently ranks No. 26 with a record of 57-59.
Following this weekend's matches the men's and women's tennis teams will travel to Olean, N.Y., for several matches in a three-day span. Both teams will take on Niagara at 5 p.m. on Feb. 24 and St. Bonaventure at 3 p.m. on Feb. 25. The women will face Duquesne at 11 a.m. on Feb. 26. All matches will be played at the St. Bonaventure Indoor Tennis Courts.
