As a walk-on to the Bucknell women's crew team this fall, every event has been a new adventure! The season began with the Learn to Row program and progressed to my first collegiate race at the Head of the Schuylkill in the midst of an unprecedented nor'easter. After spending 10 days training on the water in Elberton, Georgia, over winter break and two difficult weeks of practice in the new erg room, I felt the coaches had prepared us for the next challenge. As I walked into Davis gym last Saturday for the 16th Annual Erg Armageddon against rowers from Penn State and Susquehanna University, I could feel the competitive energy begin to build. I felt confident in the abilities of our team to prove how hard we have been working all season.
When I got onto the erg with all of my novice teammates, I could not help but notice the excitement of the coxswains and upperclassmen rowers that surrounded us. They were ready to cheer us on and offered encouragement to all of the anxious freshmen. It felt so good to have their support and made me want give my very best effort. After the race began I could not help but feel motivated by the energy of my teammates surrounding me. Both girls on either side of me were pushing me to pull harder. Ultimately, I think that is one of the qualities of a great teammate, one who is willing to help you push beyond your limits. It was clear that we all came to compete and we were ready to leave everything on the erg. While erging may seem like an independent event, the support of your teammates and the girls competing along side of you is crucial to your success.
After the Erg Armageddon was over, I was approached by several of my freshman peers and upperclassmen telling me that I did a great job. The truth is that I could not have done it without them and I cannot wait for what the rest of the season holds.
