LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman midfielder David Dickson (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) has earned the first Patriot League Rookie of the Week honor of the 2012 season. Dickson earned a starting assignment for the season opener against No. 19 Delaware, and he produced two big fourth-quarter assists in a game that the 12th-ranked Bison eventually lost in overtime.
Bucknell fell behind the Blue Hens 10-5 in the third quarter before mounting a spirited rally to tie the game at 10-10 and force overtime. It was a 10-8 game entering the final period, and Dickson assisted on both fourth-quarter goals that evened it up. In the opening minute of the quarter he fed Chase Bailey to make it a 10-9 game. Midway through the period Dickson made an alert play to pounce on the rebound of a saved shot, then he slipped a pass inside to Todd Heritage, who finished from point-blank range.
The Bison ended up conceding a goal with five seconds left in the first overtime period and fell 11-10.
Dickson scored 70 points and was a US Lacrosse High School All-American at Greenwich High School last season. He was one of two freshmen to start at midfield for the Bison, joining Joe Kearney on the first line.
Bucknell's difficult early schedule continues this Saturday with a road test at No. 11 Massachusetts.
