LEWISBURG, Pa. -Senior co-captains Brendan Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J./Pingry) and Collin Costello (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) along with freshman Chris Thorsheim (Manalapan, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) were all named to the All-Patriot League Men's Soccer Team on Tuesday. All three were second team selections. While Costello and Thorsheim were honored for the first time, Burgdorf became Bucknell's first three-time All-Patriot Leaguer since Conor O'Brien from 2007-09.
Burgdorf was a First Team All-Patriot League selection in 2010, when he was also named the league's Offensive Player of the Year. He has now earned second team honors in each of the last two seasons. For the second year in a row, Burgdorf was named to the watch list for the MAC Hermann Trophy, presented to college soccer's national player of the year. Burgdorf is also a two-time NSCAA First Team All-Region pick.
Burgdorf, who earned Capital One Academic All-District honors last week, is once again leading a very balanced Bison scoring attack in 2012. He has 11 points on three goals and five assists to rank ninth in the Patriot League in scoring. Burgdorf became a member of the 20-goal club earlier this season, and he now ranks in the top 10 on Bucknell's career charts in points (T-10th with 55) and assists (T-8th with 15).
Costello's all-league citation is another milestone in what has been an incredible senior season. Coming into the 2012 campaign he had played in only eight career games, but he was elected co-captain and has started every game at center back. Costello leads the team in minutes played and earned his first career Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week citation two weeks ago.
Costello anchors a Bison defense that leads the Patriot League in goals-against average (0.84). Bucknell has six shutouts this season and has conceded more than one goal only three times in 19 outings.
Thorsheim has been very impressive in his first season in Orange & Blue. He has started all 19 games at center midfield and ranks second in minutes played behind Costello. Thorsheim has been an excellent ball handler and distributor in the middle of the field, and he ranks second on the team with four assists.
Thorsheim is one of only two freshmen to make the All-Patriot League Team in 2012, joining Navy's Derek Vogel on the second team. Vogel was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year. Thorsheim is the first Bison rookie to earn all-conference honors since goalkeeper Adam Edwards in 2002.
Bucknell is 7-7-5 overall and 2-3-2 in the Patriot League. The Bison will be the No. 4 seed in the Patriot League Tournament, which gets underway Friday at American University. The Bison will take on top-seeded American at 11 a.m. The Eagles had a league-high six all-conference selections, including Defensive Player of the Year Cristobal Soto and Goalkeeper of the Year Billy Knutsen. Mike Reidy of Colgate was named Offensive Player of the Year, while American's Todd West was picked as the Coach of the Year.
