Men's Soccer's Joe Meyer Becomes Bucknell's 122nd Capital One Academic All-American

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Joe Meyer (Sykesville, Md./McDonogh), a junior midfielder/defender on the Bucknell men's soccer team, was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Third Team on Thursday. Meyer becomes Bucknell's 122nd all-time national Academic All-American, fifth-most among all Division I programs, and he is the eighth student-athlete from the Bison men's soccer program to earn the prestigious honor.
Already this fall, Meyer had garnered spots on the 11-man Patriot League All-Academic Team as well as the Capital One All-District 2 First Team. The latter citation made him eligible for the national Academic All-America Team. Student-athletes must have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key reserve to be considered for Academic All-America honors.
Meyer boasts a 3.97 cumulative GPA at Bucknell, including a perfect 4.00 mark within Bucknell's challenging mechanical engineering program. He has one of the top GPAs of any Bison student-athlete, and he has been a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll every year so far. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and also represents the men's soccer team on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
On the field, Meyer started all 20 games this season and helped lead the Bison to a Patriot League Tournament berth. Meyer started at outside midfield for most of the season, but late in the year he moved to fullback to help solidify that position after the team suffered some injuries there. He was part of a defense that led the Patriot League with a 0.85 goals-against average.
Meyer also contributed two goals and an assist this season. His first career goal came at Florida Gulf Coast in the third game of the year, an 84th-minute equalizer that sent the game into overtime. He also scored in a victory over Adelphi and assisted on Brendan Burgdorf's goal in a 1-1 draw with Navy. Meyer now has five career assists in addition to the two goals.
Meyer is the Bucknell men's soccer program's first Academic All-American since Patrick Selwood earned second team honors in 2009. Other men's soccer honorees include Greg Beatty in 1994 and 1995, Ryan Weber in 2001, Jonathan Hemmert in 2003 and 2004, and Chris Hennings in 2008.
Bucknell's 122 all-time Academic All-American trails only Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford among all Division I institutions.
