EASTON, Pa. - Bucknell field hockey qualified for its program-best fifth consecutive Patriot League Tournament, but the Bison could not keep a run of upsets going as they fell 4-0 to American at Rappolt Field on Friday afternoon. Goalkeeper Erica Perrine (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) made eight saves before third-seeded Bucknell ended its 2012 campaign with a 9-10 overall record.
No. 2 American (10-9) got the best of Bucknell in the semifinals, although the first-half score barely showed it. The Eagles had a 7-3 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in penalty corners, but they took just a 1-0 lead into halftime after Shelly Montgomery scored off a rebound.
Despite being known as a strong second-half team, the Bison could not make up ground as the contest wore on. American netted three more goals, including one barely five minutes after play resumed. Montgomery eventually scored her second goal of the day with less than 10 minutes left on the clock and made it 4-0. It was American's second score off a penalty corner.
During that same late stretch, Bucknell struggled to find its offensive opportunities. It recorded just one shot in the second half, ultimately finishing the game down 13-4 in that category.
Perrine allowed all four goals for Bucknell to go along with her eight saves. The junior, who was named Second Team All-Patriot League and Academic All-Patriot League yesterday, finishes the year 9-10 in goal. That wins total ties her for sixth on the program single-season list.
Earning the win in goal for American was Ashley Dalisera with a three-save shutout.
Playing in their final game in the Orange & Blue were seniors Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) and Kelly Stefanowicz (Landsdale, Pa./Mount St. Joseph Academy). A 2012 Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year and First Team All-Patriot League selection, Siegrist will finish her career ranked eighth in program history with 16 assists.
American will now advance to the Patriot League Championship set for 3 p.m. tomorrow in Easton, Pa. The Eagles will take on No. 1 Lafayette, which defeated Colgate 4-3 in overtime in the first semifinal game on Friday.
