LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior defender Collin Costello (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and freshman forward Jesse Klug (Sammamish, Wash./Overlake School) played key roles in a 2-0 week for the Bucknell men's soccer team, and they were both honored with Patriot League weekly awards on Monday. Costello was selected as the Brine Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, while Klug earned Brine Rookie of the Week honors.
Bucknell posted a pair of 1-0 victories last week. The first came in a non-league road match against NJIT on Tuesday, and then the Bison followed that up with a critical home victory against Colgate, which came in to Saturday's game unbeaten in Patriot League play.
Costello, a team co-captain, anchored the defensive back four in both shutout victories. He played all 180 minutes in the two matches and was part of a defense that allowed a total of only 14 shot attempts. NJIT, which came in with an 8-7 record and a 5-2 mark at home, managed only eight shots, while Colgate had just six.
Klug scored the lone goal against Colgate just 4:47 into the game, and his third tally of the season held up as the game-winner.
Costello was one of six seniors honored prior to the Colgate game as part of Senior Day festivities. After playing a reserve role for three seasons, Costello has started every game in 2012 and leads the team in minutes played. He even has two goals and two assists, with the goals coming in back-to-back games against Penn State and Army earlier this month.
Klug has leads the Patriot League with 59 shots taken this season. He had been bitten by some bad luck and some quality opposing goaltending in recent weeks, but his third goal of the season was a quality finish on a breakaway after senior Brendan Burgdorf sent him in with a header.
Bucknell is now 7-6-4 overall and 2-2-2 in the Patriot League. With one league game remaining -- at Lafayette on Saturday at 4 p.m. - the Bison are tied for fourth place in the standings with Holy Cross, but they are just one point out of second place. American has clinched the regular-season title with 14 points, while Lafayette and Colgate are tied for second with nine points. The top four teams qualify for the Patriot League Tournament.
