Bucknell Women's Soccer Season Ends with 1-0 Loss in Annapolis

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A winning season for the Bucknell women's soccer team came to a sudden end on Saturday, as the Bison dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision at first-place Navy on Saturday, and later in the day Bucknell was eliminated from the Patriot League Tournament when Lehigh defeated Holy Cross 4-0. The Bison conclude the season with a 10-9 record, while Navy improved to 18-1-1 and secured the No. 1 seed for next week's Patriot League Tournament.
"We had two great chances in the first half and three or four in the second, but we just could not capitalize," said coach Ben Landis after the game. "We walked off the field with our heads held high. We fought hard and went toe-to-toe with a very good team. Navy is 18-1-1 for a reason. They deserve to host the tournament and we wish them well."
Despite being outshot 15-5, Bucknell was just under two minutes away from getting to the locker room still tied at 0-0, but at the 43:01 mark Navy's Kaylie Davidson cut in from the right side to clear space for a shot, and she fired it in off the crossbar to put the Mids up 1-0.
Bucknell outshot Navy 9-8 in the second half, but could not get the equalizer. Elizabeth Hoerner made six saves for the Mids, while Sandita McDermott had a big day for the Bison with 11 saves.
McDermott will graduate as one of the top goalkeepers in Bucknell history. On Bucknell's career charts she ranks second in shutouts (14), second in goals-against average (1.39), third in save percentage (.807), fourth in wins (20) and fifth in total saves (293).
"Sandita had another great game, she gave it everything she had, as did the whole team," said Landis.
Courtney Nelson led the Bison with five shots, three of which were on goal, while Liz Dwornik had four shots.
Bucknell finished 3-4 in the Patriot League and is tied for fourth place with Lehigh, but a double-overtime loss to the Mountain Hawks last week gives Lehigh the tiebreaker edge. Army can make it a three-way tie for fourth place with a victory over Lafayette on Sunday, but Lehigh would still come out ahead in that tiebreaker.
Bucknell reached double-digit victories and posted a winning record for the sixth time in the last eight years.
