LEWISBURG, Pa. - Three weeks after their season-opening unscored meet at UMBC, the Bucknell swimming and diving teams will be back in the pool Saturday in Storrs, Conn. The Bison squads will face host UConn and Fordham at Wolff-Zackin Natatorium at noon in a double dual meet that will be scored.
Both Bucknell's men's and women's teams will be facing Connecticut for the second time in program history. The Bison hosted UConn in a Friday night meet in January 2011 and lost both meets. The men dropped a 177.5-116.5 decision to the Huskies, while the women lost by a 191-109 score.
The Bucknell men are 8-4 all-time against Fordham. The Bison and Rams will be meeting for the first time since Bucknell posted a 151-97 victory in 1994-95 when Fordham was still a member of the Patriot League. The women's squads also last met that same year with the Bison winning 145-60. Bucknell's women are 10-0 all-time against the Rams.
This is the second of four road meets for Bucknell in 2012-13, which opens with three straight competitions away from home. The Bison will compete at Kinney Natatorium seven times, including February's Patriot League Championships.
Bucknell's men posted a 7-2 overall record in 2011-12 and finished in second place at the Patriot League Championships. The women were 5-4 in duals and placed third at the league meet.
Even though it is early in the year, the Bison have already earned one weekly award. Sophomore Katie Hetherington was named the Patriot League Female Diver of the Week Oct. 8 after sweeping both boards against UMBC.
Bucknell will next be in action in two weeks when it travels to Easton, Pa., for a quad meet against Patriot League foes American, Lafayette and Navy. Those four teams have gotten together for an early season meet each of the last five years.
