LEWISBURG, Pa. -The Bucknell men's water polo team improved to 2-1 on the weekend with a 13-8 victory over George Washington Sunday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison outscored the Colonials 4-1 in the second quarter and put together a 6-1 run that spanned three quarters to earn their eighth win of the year.
Bucknell (8-10, 2-5 CWPA Southern Division) lost to George Washington (9-11, 1-4 CWPA) by three goals in their first league matchup of the year three weeks ago, but a balanced scoring attack helped the Bison avenge that loss. Alex Nowlin netted five goals and dished out two assists, while Brian Barron registered three goals and two assists on the heels of an eight-goal performance Saturday night vs. nationally ranked Navy. Jack Else chipped in two scores to give Bucknell three multi-goal scorers.
The Bison defense was also strong as the eight goals the Colonials scored marked the lowest figure by a league opponent against Bucknell this year. Spearheading the defensive effort was goalie Matt Napleton, who stopped 15 shots in cage, putting him above the 500 plateau (513) in his career.
Six of the Bison's 13 goals came in six-on-five situations, and Barron connected on a five-meter penalty shot early in the second quarter. Bucknell converted 75 percent of its man-up opportunities.
A goal by Paul Deasey in the opening minute of play gave George Washington the early advantage. The Bison countered by tallying six of the next seven goals during a 12 minute, 23 second stretch that reached into the third quarter.
The third quarter was a high-scoring period as Bucknell outscored George Washington in the period with the teams alternating goals throughout.
Among the milestone reached in the contest was Else equaling his own program single-season record for ejections drawn. He drew six against the Colonials, giving him 78 this year to equal his own record. No other Bison has ever had as many as 70 ejections drawn.
George Washington's offense was led by three goals from Ridvan Pehilvan, while goalie Cameron Illes made 11 saves.
Bucknell, which split against Johns Hopkins (W, 12-10 OT) and Navy (L, 17-11) on Saturday, will wrap up its weekend of league play Sunday at 5:30 p.m. against No. 16 Princeton in Kinney Natatorium.
