EASTON, Pa. - Bucknell field hockey suffered its first league loss of the season, falling 2-0 to No. 14 Lafayette at Rappolt Field on Saturday afternoon. The Bison (8-7, 2-1 PL) outshot the defending Patriot League champions 8-3 but could not avoid the shutout. The Leopards (11-1, 3-0 PL) are now in sole possession of the top spot in the league standings.
Lafayette scored once in each half, getting a goal from Emily Valeo in the first and Jenna Seybert in the second. Seybert's score came on the Leopards' only shot in the half. Lafayette finished the day with three shots, all of which were on goal. Bucknell had eight shots, including seven in the second half. Three of the Bison's attempts made it on goal but were turned away each time by Jessica Deutsch (11-1), who earned her first Patriot League shutout of the season.
Erica Perrine (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) saw her record drop to 8-7 on the year after making one save and allowing both goals.
Bucknell had dropped each of its last five games to Lafayette. Three of those have come in the Patriot League Tournament, including last season when the Leopards took a 3-1 win in the championship match. Saturday also marked the first time since 2006 that the Bison went scoreless against the Leopards.
Bucknell will now have a week to prepare for its next Patriot League matchup. The Bison host Lehigh at 12 p.m. on Oct. 20 at Graham Field. Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) and Kelly Stefanowicz (Lansdale, Pa./Mount St. Joseph's Academy) will be recognized as part of Senior Day prior to the game.
