LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's water polo team honored two of its players during senior night in a heated contest against the No. 14 Navy Midshipmen. Senior captains Brian Barron and Matt Napleton took center stage during the game leading the Bison into the fourth period down by one, but their efforts were trumped by Navy as the Midshipmen pulled out a 17-11 victory.
Bucknell (7-10, 1-5 CWPA Southern Division) was led by Barron, who scored eight goals during his senior night for the Bison. It marked the most goals by a Bucknell player since at least 2000. His fellow senior captain Napleton played large in the net with 11 saves, but Navy managed to score six fourth-period goals to see out the victory. Navy (19-3, 4-1 CWPA Southern Division) relied on eight different players in the scoring department and were led by attacker Thomas Patterson's four goals.
The Bison scored the first goal of the game and it quickly became a goal-for-goal contest with each team recording six goals at halftime. Barron scored five first-half goals and seven straight goals in total to lead the Bison heading into the fourth period.
Bucknell went into the fourth period trailing 11-10 and within 48 seconds were down by two goals. The Bison succeeded in getting a goal back from freshman Stefan Aleksic to bring the score to 12-11. The Midshipmen were too much for the Bison to handle as Navy scored the final five to bring Bucknell's day to an end.
The Bison play at 1 and 5:30 p.m. Sunday against George Washington and Princeton at Kinney Natatorium.
