LEWISBURG, Pa. - The women's rowing team has won the second annual Bucknell Cup. The Bucknell Cup is a year-long competition among all of Bucknell's varsity sports teams based on academic achievement, athletic achievement, BU pride, community service and Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) participation. The SAAC sponsors the competition and determines the winner.
Won by men's lacrosse in its first year (2010-11), the Bucknell Cup takes into consideration all of the primary aspects of Bucknell's community. The academic achievement is ranked based on total grade-point average for the both semesters. Athletic achievement is ranked by place finished in the Patriot League, number of NCAA qualifiers, and weekly awards. BU pride is determined by the percentage of on-campus athletic events attended. Additional points are awarded for each community service event the team participates in, and for each SAAC meeting that is attended by a team member.
Winning the Bucknell Cup only adds to an already very strong 2011-12 campaign for the women's rowing team. After winning its seventh consecutive Patriot League title, the Bison captured the gold medal at the Dad Vail Regatta, and then the Lightweight Eight claimed the silver medal in the Grand Final of the IRA National Championship Regatta, which equaled the second-best result in program history. These top finishes in the span of just over a month marked one of the best stretches in the history of the Bucknell's women rowing program.
In addition to finishing first in Patriot League, the women's rowing team also had a cumulative GPA of better than 3.30, volunteered at a local food bank, visited a local elementary school and read to the kids and visited middle schools in the area to teach over 2,000 students the basics of rowing using an ergometer.
"This is an incredible achievement on the part of our athletes," commented women's rowing coach Stephen Kish. "It represents their dedication not just to their studies and their athletics, but to the community at large, and we couldn't be more thrilled."
The Bison will continue their fall workouts with more dedication than ever as it was recently announced that the Patriot League Champion is expected to receive an automatic bid into the NCAA field starting next spring. Bucknell, which has been on top of the Patriot League for seven years in a row, will look to make sure it continues that success in future years.
