LEWISBURG, Pa. - After posting a career-high 21 points in the Patriot League opener against Army and tying a career best with nine rebounds against Yale earlier in the week, Bucknell women's basketball's Rachel Voss (Cincinnati, Ohio/Loveland) was named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday. It is the first honor of the season for the junior, who averaged 12.0 points and 5.5 rebounds to start off the month of January.
Voss' 21 points came on impressive 9-for-13 (.692) shooting against Army on Saturday night. The forward was also 2-for-3 from behind the 3-point line and dished out three assists. It was the second 20-point performance of her career and the first since her freshman campaign when she scored 20 on Colgate. Her nine made field goals was also a career high.
Voss made her presence felt defensively against Yale last Tuesday as well with nine boards and one steal. The nine rebounds tied a career best that was set in the same Colgate game as a freshman where she set her previous scoring high mark.
Through the first half of the season, Voss is third on the team in scoring (7.1) and fifth in rebounding (4.0). Her 17 steals and 21 assists also rank among the squad's best. Her scoring average also places her 23rd in the Patriot League this winter.
The Bison Athlete of the Week honor is the first of Voss' career. A 2010 Patriot League All-Rookie Team selection, she was also a two-time league Rookie of the Week. Lindsay Horbatuck (Avon, Conn./Avon) was women's basketball's last Bison Athlete of the Week, having earned the award on Dec. 11, 2011. The last time more than one women's basketball player claimed the honor in a single season was in 2007-08 when Kesha Champion, Hope Foster and Kristina Collymore were recognized.
Bucknell will be back in action on Wednesday when it makes the trip to Colgate. Tipoff in Hamilton, N.Y., is set for 7 p.m.
