After reflecting on the first half of our season, it cannot be denied that it has been repeatedly marked with success. Even though we have been fighting through a series of illnesses and injuries, we have still managed to maintain a winning record for dual meets and claim first place at our own Bison Invite against five other strong teams. However, despite these initial accomplishments, we knew that we had not yet come close to our maximum potential and that we still had a long road ahead of us to achieve the goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of the season.
Armed with recent success and the desire to improve even more, we went into the stretch of winter training with renewed motivation. Before we went home for holiday break, the team travelled to Boca Raton, Florida, for several days, during which I witnessed some of the hardest training of the season. Going to Florida allowed us to bond more as a team and, by removing all other distractions, to focus solely on the work that needed to be done in the pool and on the boards. The change of scenery to one of sunshine and palm trees helped us escape the dreariness of training and allowed spirits to remain high as we worked hard to set ourselves up for continued success in the second half of the season.
Though it is nice to have a long period of time to train without the interruption of competition, we are also looking forward to the upcoming dual meets as a way to show off all of our hard work and practice racing again before we head to our championship meets. We will face off against several very competitive teams over the next few weeks, which will test our abilities to come together as a team and remain focused. One can feel the excitement building as championship season looms nearer and I have no doubt that a team as close-knit and determined as this one will achieve all that we set out to accomplish.
