LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell head women's soccer coach Ben Landis has announced the election of current juniors Meghan Fitzpatrick (Verona, N.J./Verona), Sandita McDermott (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Red Hook) and Kayla Yee (Centennial, Colo./Heritage) as team captains for the 2012 season.
Also of note this offseason, senior Tara Cort (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) added yet another academic honor with her selection to the NSCAA Scholar-All East Team.
Already this year Cort was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team and the Patriot League All-Academic Team. She also earned First Team All-Patriot League honors this fall. One of the top central midfielders in the league, Cort was a dynamic two-way player for the Bison. She started all 36 games over the last two seasons after transferring to Bucknell from Clemson.
Off the field, Cort has a stellar 3.97 grade-point averages at Bucknell, where she has majored in economics and financial management, respectively. A perennial Dean's List honoree, Cort interned last summer at PWC Financial Services in Boston.
The Bison also earned an NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 16th year in a row. Bucknell's 3.54 combined team GPA was one of the best in the nation.
All three of next year's team captains have played key roles for the Bison. McDermott is coming off an all-conference season as Bucknell's starting goalkeeper. Yee has been a creative offensive player when healthy, and Fitzpatrick overcame injury obstacles of her own to become an important part of Bucknell's back four.
McDermott became the third Bucknell goalkeeper to earn All-Patriot League honors, joining Becky Snover in 1995 and Kathryn Sutton in 2007 and 2009. McDermott enjoyed her best season to date in 2011, posting an .835 save percentage and a 1.14 goals-against average. She ranked third in the Patriot League in save percentage and second in saves per game (5.4). On Bucknell's all-time single-season charts, McDermott's 1.14 GAA ranks third in program history, and she backstopped a Bison defense that conceded the second-fewest goals (19) in team history.
Fitzpatrick made a welcome return to the lineup in 2011 after missing all of her first two seasons due to injury. This fall she started eight games on defense before being sidelined by another injury. While on the field she was a key contributor on a team that allowed only 19 goals this season, the second-fewest in program history. She also made the Capital One Academic All-District Team with a stellar 3.98 GPA.
Yee played in 11 games this fall, missing five due to injury. She scored a pair of goals, including a big one in a key home Patriot League victory over Lafayette. Yee has four career goals, which will be the most of any returning Bison player in 2012.
"I think this captain trio absolutely will provide tremendous leadership and support, and will work with the entire Class of 2013 to ensure that the 2012 Team does all of these things necessary to help our program compete for a championship," said Landis. "They will guide the team while always best representing the traditions of the program, supporting our academic success, developing our great team chemistry, and achieving competitive success. I am thrilled about their selection by the team and excited to see them each wear the Captain bands proudly."
