BETHLEHEM, Pa. -Bucknell men's cross country battled with some of the top teams in the country at the Paul Short Memorial Invitational, placing 38th as a team in the Gold Race in Bethlehem, Pa., on Friday morning. D.J. Krystek (Pitcairn, Pa./Gateway Senior) led the Bison by completing the eight-kilometer course in 26:02.
Krystek's time earned him 197th place in a field of more than 400 runners. The junior was the only Bison in the top 200 as he was trailed by teammates Dave Brown (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) and Dan Dillon (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) in 237th and 244th, respectively. Brown clocked in at 26:23, while Dillon crossed the line in 26:28.
Bucknell's next four finishers were freshmen. Rounding out the top five scorers were John Dugan (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) in 266th place (26:37) and Andrew Garcia-Garrison (Detroit, Mich./Catholic Central) in 271st (26:40). Glen Williams (Landenberg, Pa./Kennett) and Andrew Kirna (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) followed soon after.
As a team, Bucknell totaled 1,069 points for 38th in a field of 45 squads. Taking the team title was Oklahoma with 34 points. The Sooners had four runners in the top 10, but it was UNC Greensboro's Paul Chelimo who took the individual title in 23:55.
In the open race, Brian Charland (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) and Eric Balaban (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) claimed top-100 finishes for the Bison. Charland led the way with an 87th-place performance, finishing the 8K course in 27:12.
Bucknell's season will continue on Oct. 8 at the Father Bede Invitational, hosted by Saint Francis (Pa.) in Loretto, Pa.
