LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell field hockey continued to claim accolades on Monday as Vickie Resh (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg Area) was named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week. Resh scored the game-tying goal and made a key defensive stop late in the contest in Bucknell's eventual overtime win against Lock Haven on Sunday.
Resh tallied her first career goal on a penalty corner late in the first half at Lock Haven. The score erased the one-goal deficit the Bison had been trying to overcome for nearly 50 minutes. The sophomore midfielder later kept the game knotted up as she deflected a long pass and stopped a Lock Haven breakaway with less than one minute remaining in regulation. Resh's diving effort ended the Lady Eagles' attack and hopes of a last-second victory.
Resh's play helped lead Bucknell to its second consecutive overtime win. The Bison also defeated Central Michigan 2-1 in extra time last weekend. Bucknell is 4-1 in overtime games since the start of the 2010 season when Resh joined the squad.
The award is the first of Resh's career and the first by a field hockey player this season. Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, British Columbia/Handsworth Secondary) was the last field hockey player to be named the Bison Athlete of the Week on Sept. 26, 2010 after a pair of standout performances in strokeoffs.
Earlier today, Ellie Riegel (Darien, Conn./Darien) was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week. Riegel scored the game-winning goal at Lock Haven, giving her the first points of her career.
Bucknell is 2-4 on the fall. The squad will be back in action for a 1 p.m. matchup with Rider on Saturday at Graham Field.
