LEWISBURG, Pa. - For the second week in a row, a Bucknell field hockey freshman has been honored by the Patriot League as Ellie Riegel (Darien, Conn./Darien) was named Rookie of the Week on Monday. Riegel netted the game-winning goal in overtime and helped hold Lock Haven scoreless for nearly 60 minutes to send the Bison to a 2-1 decision over the Lady Eagles yesterday.
Riegel's first career goal broke a 1-1 tie just :45 into overtime. The freshman corralled a loose ball in front of the net before firing it back at the Eagles' keeper for the win.
While the offensive effort was Riegel's most noticeable contribution to the game, the midfielder also came off the bench to help shut out Lock Haven for almost 60 minutes. The Bison defense held the Lady Eagles to just two shots in the second half and three penalty corners for the entire game.
The award is the first of the season for Riegel, who joins classmate Amie Pritchard (Rumson, N.J./Kent School (Conn.)) who was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week last Monday.
Bucknell is 2-4 on the season. The Bison will be back in action on Saturday when they host Rider in the first of a five-game homestand. The Bucknell vs. Rider showdown is set for a 1 p.m. start at Graham Field. Live stats on GameTracker will be available at BucknellBison.com.
