ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Bucknell field hockey struggled to maintain its momentum a day after knocking off Central Michigan in overtime, falling 5-0 to No. 14 Michigan at Ocker Field on Sunday afternoon. The Wolverines' Emy Guttman registered a hat trick to drop the Bison's record to 1-4 on the year.
Bucknell matched Michigan (4-2) evenly in the early goings until Guttman broke things open with two consecutive goals less than two minutes apart in the first half. The two-goal led set within the first 12 minutes held for the remainder of the period.
Bison goalkeeper Erica Perrine (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) made six saves in the game, four of which came in the first half. Michigan's Christi Barwick also saw most of her action in the opening frame, making all three of her saves during that time.
Guttman's impact continued as the game wore on. She later assisted on a score for 4-0 before earning her third goal to cap off the offense in the final 10 minutes of the contest. The freshman accounted for seven of her team's 13 points.
Michigan held the advantage in shots, 17-4, for the game. In a reversal of fortune, the Bison also found themselves on the down side of an 11-2 margin in penalty corners.
Perrine took the loss in goal, falling to 1-2 after making six saves but allowing all five goals. Barwick improved to 3-0 with three saves in 59:45 of action.
Bucknell will be back in action on Sept. 18 when it makes the short trip to Lock Haven for a 1 p.m. game. The contest will be the last on the road for several weeks, as the Bison will then their next five at Graham Field beginning with Rider at 1 p.m. on Sept. 24.
