LEWISBURG, Pa. - One day after learning it would be traveling to Virginia for the NCAA Tournament, the Bucknell men's lacrosse team on Monday received its highest national ranking in program history with a No. 7 listing in the USILA Coaches' Poll. The Bison, who are also ranked No. 10 in this week's Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, are tied with No. 1 Syracuse for the most victories in the nation with 14.
Bucknell's previous high-water mark in the USILA Poll was No. 9. The Bison were ninth in four different weeks: Apr. 23, 1996; Apr. 30, 1996; Apr. 3, 2001; and Apr. 14, 2008.
Bucknell has now been ranked in at least one of the two major national polls for 10 straight weeks, including five in a row in the top 12. The Bison were ranked No. 11 in both polls last week.
Bucknell's NCAA Tournament opponent, Virginia, is ranked No. 9 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Poll and No. 10 in the USILA Poll this week. Syracuse, the top seed in the NCAA Tournament, is ranked No. 1 in both polls.
The Bison enter the national tourney on an eight-game winning streak, including one-sided wins over Lehigh and Colgate last week in the Patriot League Tournament. At 14-2 overall, Bucknell has broken the program record for wins in a season, bettering the previous standard of 12 set by the undefeated 1996 team.
Bucknell and Virginia will meet at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville this Sunday, May 15, at 3 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
