LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional), a captain on the cross country and track and field teams, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held in Terrace Room on Tuesday, May 3.
Moniz won the Ronald J. "Pete" Pedrick Award, presented to senior athletes "in recognition of demonstrated improvement and special contributions to Bucknell athletics over a four-year period". Moniz shared the award with Jake Clarke of the lacrosse team, who was the male selection.
A two-year team captain, Moniz has helped Bucknell cross country and track and field to six Patriot League titles during her time in the Orange and Blue. After scoring for the Bison in several of those meets, the distance runner broke out during the outdoor track season of her junior year. She set program top-10 marks in five of her six individual races and helped two separate relays break into the record books as well. At the end of the campaign, she ranked second all-time at Bucknell in the 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meters behind three different record-holders.
Also as a junior, Moniz was named First Team All-Patriot League after the outdoor 4x800 relay won the individual title with a time of 8:59.33, setting a new Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. It was her third career all-league citation. She later went on to be named to the first team in cross country as a senior.
A member of the Bucknell Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, as well as a member of the inaugural Patriot League All-Academic Team during cross country season, Moniz will graduate later this month with a degree in neuroscience.
