LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Molly Goebel (Marblehead, Mass./Belmont Hill School), a member of the Bison women's swimming and diving team, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held at the Elaine Langone Center on Tuesday, May 3.
Goebel won the Bison Club Award, presented to senior athletes "who best exemplify the winning spirit of the University's athletic program." Goebel shared the award with Doug Shribman of the baseball team, who was the male selection.
In addition to Goebel, several other student-athletes were honored at the banquet, including the winners of the Christy Mathewson Award, given to the most outstanding athletes in the senior class.
A team co-captain, Goebel topped off a remarkable career with a Patriot League title in the 50-yard freestyle this past February inside Kinney Natatorium. She became just the second Bison in the last five years to win an event at the Patriot League Championships.
The ninth Bison to earn four career All-Patriot League honors, Goebel was a first-team selection each of her final two campaigns.
A consistent performer, Goebel scored at the Patriot League Championships all four years in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly, piling up 167 career points at the league meet, the fifth-most points by any member of the Class of 2011.
The Bucknell record-holder in the 50 free (23.20), Goebel also ranks in the top 10 in program history in the 100 fly (2nd) and 100 free (6th). She also appears on the relay top-10 lists 22 times, including four school records.
Bucknell is a highly selective, privately endowed liberal arts institution with an enrollment of approximately 3,500 undergraduate students. Bucknell competes in NCAA Division I as a member of the Patriot League and has full membership along with American, Army, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy. Bucknell has won the Presidents' Cup, signifying the Patriot League's all-sports champion, in 16 of 20 years, including 12 of the last 13.
