LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) capped off her time on the Orange and Blue with the best race of her career, setting the school record in the 5,000 meters at the ECAC Championships on Friday. The senior completed the race in 16 minutes, 56.23 seconds, which propelled her to her first-ever Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week honor.
Competing in the last race of her career, Moniz placed 14th in the 5K last weekend. Her school-record time of 16:56.23 was more than three seconds faster than the previous best mark (16:59.98) held by Becki Marshall since 2001.
The performance wrapped up a championship season that also included second-place finishes in the 5,000 and 4x800 relay at the Patriot League Championships May 6-7. Moniz was also third in the 1,500 meters at the meet in which she was named Second Team All-Patriot League and helped the Bison to a third consecutive team title.
In addition to her new record, Moniz is also second all-time at Bucknell in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters. The team co-captain is also a part of the 4x800 relay that ranks 10th and the distance medley relays that are fifth and seventh in program annals.
The Bison Athlete of the Week accolade is the first of Moniz' career but the second consecutive for Bucknell track and field. Justin Hicks (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School), who received All-East honors in the 100 meters and the 4x100 and on Sunday became just the second Bison men in program to earn two citations in the same meet, was last week's citation.
Bucknell will now look forward to the NCAA Championships with the first rounds in the East Region being held May 26-28 in Bloomington, Ind. The top 48 athletes in each event in each region will qualify for the championships. Those Bison currently making the cut include Ted Heitzman (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) in the javelin (11th regionally), Leonard Joseph (Whitesboro, N.Y./Clinton) in the hammer (39), and Laura Rycek (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) (7), Kat Folger (Groton, Mass./Bishop Guertin) (45) and Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) (48) in the javelin.
