PRINCETON, N.J. - Bucknell track and field earned four more All-East accolades on the final day of competition at the IC4A and ECAC Championships at Princeton's Weaver Stadium. Justin Hicks (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School), who was fourth in the 100 meters and seventh as part of the 4x100 relay, becomes just the second Bison in men's history to be named All-East in two events at the same championship. Ted Heitzman (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) was also third in the javelin, while the women's 4x800 was fourth.
Hicks began the day by running the second leg of the 4x100 relay with Marlon Woods (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods), Kamal Riley (Hyde Park, Mass./Charlestown) and Isaih Bell (Stone Mountain, Ga./Clarkston). The quartet was seventh in the final with a time of 41.02 seconds, just a hair faster than their mark in the preliminary heats.
Hicks, who entered the 100-meter final seeded fifth, improved his standing to fourth with a time of 10.71 seconds. The sophomore's performance on the final Sunday made him the only Bison other than Noel Powell to earn multiple All-East honors at the outdoor championships. Powell did so in both 2001 and 2003, first in the long jump and 4x100 and later in the long jump and 200 meters.
Heitzman's third-place finish in the javelin was the best of his career and made him an All-East honoree for the second time. The junior threw 223 feet, 5 inches to lead the Bison in the field events. With his bronze medal, Heitzman becomes Bucknell's highest finisher since Dan Frake was third in the hammer in 2006.
Heitzman will now look toward the NCAA Regionals. Earlier in the week, he was ranked 18th nationally in the javelin.
The fourth group to be named All-East was Hana Casalnova (Grove City, Pa./Grove City), Emily Waksmunski (Carrolltown, Pa./Bishop Carroll), Erin Holbrook (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and Caroline Tolli (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) in the 4x800. Despite mixing up the order after the prelims, the squad posted a nearly identical time of 8:58.04, just three-hundredths of a second slower than yesterday. With both finishes this weekend, the quartet now ranks seventh and eighth all-time in program annals.
In the team standings, the Bison men were tied for 22nd out of 52 squads, while the women were tied for 35th out of 54. Duke won both championships.
Bucknell's attention will next turn toward the NCAA Regionals at Bloomington, Ind., May 26-28. The top 48 athletes in each event in the East Region will qualify for what are technically the first rounds of the NCAA Championships.
