LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior women's water polo player Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) was named First Team Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) All-Western Division, it was announced Thursday evening at the Eastern Championship banquet. It is the fourth career all-conference honor for Canonica, who earned first-team plaudits in 2010 and second-team citations in 2008 and 2009.
A 2010 Honorable Mention All-American, Canonica was the only Bison recognized. Michigan, Hartwick and Indiana, the top three seeds at this weekend's Eastern Championship, garnered 11 of the 14 all-conference slots and all three major awards.
Bucknell's all-time leading scorer with 409 career points, Canonica has tallied 35 goals, a team-high 39 assists and 74 points this season. She ranks third on the squad in goals and second in points.
Canonica, last year, broke the Bison career assists record and now has 215 in her career, better than 50 percent more than previous record holder Adrienne Schober's tally of 142.
The only player in program history with three 100-point seasons, Canonica has drawn a team-high 43 ejections this year and now ranks third on the all-time list with 178. Overall, Canonica ranks in the top 10 in program history in six categories, including shots (447) and games started (118).
Already the program single-game assists record holder (6), Canonica matched the school standard for points in a game (10) two weeks ago against Gannon when she tallied five goals and five assists in a record-breaking 26-6 victory.
Canonica has registered at least one point in 23 of 24 games played this season and in 52 of her last 53 appearances.
With four career all-conference awards, Canonica becomes the third Bison to accomplish that feat, joining Meagan Gins and Valentina Rozas. Canonica's first three honors were All-Southern Division awards, but the CWPA divisions were re-aligned this year and Bucknell landed in the Western Division.
Canonica will lead the Bison in this weekend's Eastern Championship. Tenth-seeded Bucknell (11-16, 1-4 CWPA) opens play Friday at 10:20 a.m. against seventh-seeded Brown.
