BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Doug Shribman was 6-for-11 with three home runs and seven runs batted in and the Bison bullpen allowed just three runs in 8.0 innings pitched as the Bucknell baseball team swept a doubleheader at Lehigh's Goodman Campus Sunday afternoon. The Bison claimed game one 15-5 thanks to four home runs and 17 hits, while they won game two by an 11-6 margin, scoring six runs in the final two innings.
Shribman, who earlier this year became Bucknell's all-time home run leader, hit two homers in game one and followed with another in game two, vaulting his career total to 42 and his season figure to 15. His seven RBIs moved his season total to 43 and brought him to within 10 of Tyler Prout's program career standard.
Drew Constable hit a solo home run in both ends of the doubleheader and was 6-for-10 with five runs scored, while Bob Donato hit his fourth home run this week in the opener, moving his season total to 10. He was 3-for-7 on the day with four runs scored.
The Bison bullpen was strong all day as Eric Jarrett pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief in game one, while Alex Cillo, Dan Goldstein and Steve Carlin yielded just three runs in 6.2 innings in relief of starter Jack Boehm in game two. Cillo picked up his second win in the series to improve to 3-1 on the year.
Bucknell's two wins on Sunday gave them a 3-1 win in the series against Lehigh, marking the first time it has taken a four-game Patriot League series this year. Additionally, it was the first sweep of a doubleheader for the Bison since March 26 vs. Longwood. Bucknell is now 7-9 in Patriot League play and is tied with the Mountain Hawks and in a virtual tie with Holy Cross (6-8) for the fourth, and final, postseason berth. The Crusaders, who split their doubleheader with Navy on Sunday, will wrap up their weekend of play on Monday.
The top four hitters in the Bucknell lineup led the charge in game one as leadoff hitter Constable, Donato, Shribman and cleanup hitter Gerry Runyan were a combined 12-for-16 with nine runs batted in and 12 runs scored. The Bison had four multi-run innings in the seven-inning contest, including sending 13 men to the plate and scoring seven runs in the third inning.
A two-run homer by Donato in the first inning gave Bucknell (20-24, 7-9 PL) an early 2-0 lead.
The Bison's seven-run third inning featured five singles, three walks, a hit by pitch and one Lehigh (23-18, 7-9 PL) error.
Shribman then hit his first home run of the day, a two-run shot, in the fifth. He then hit another in the seventh, two batters after Constable hit a solo homer run leading off the inning. David Duffett also had an RBI double in the frame to cap the game's scoring.
The Mountain Hawks used five pitchers in game one with none lasting more than two innings. Starter Brandon Sady fell to 1-2 on the season as he was touched for seven runs and six hits in 2.1 innings.
Trey Frahler (2-6) earned the win for the Bison, pitching 5.2 innings and leaving with Bucknell leading 11-5 two outs into the sixth inning. Frahler's four strikeouts moved him past Mathew Wilson and into eighth place on the program's career strikeout list (155).
Bucknell posted four more multi-run innings in game two and scored six runs in the final two frames to break open a 5-4 ball game. Matt Lamore was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Shribman hit another two-run home run, his third of the day.
The Bison again took an early lead when Constable led off with a home run, his second round-tripper in as many at bats. Two more runs followed in the inning and Bucknell led 3-0.
Lehigh battled back with single runs in the first and second, and two more in the third when it knocked starter Jack Boehm from the game.
Cillo, Goldstein and Carlin scattered nine hits over the final 6.2 innings and permitted just three runs.
The Bison went back on top on Shribman's homer in the fifth and then exploded for six runs on five hits and three walks in the final two frames. Lamore knocked in all three of his runs in the eighth and ninth on a single and a double.
Lehigh's Kevin Mihalik had a pair of two-hit games in the doubleheader to lead the Mountain Hawks, while Andrew Russell was 4-for-4 in the nightcap. Lehigh hit just one home run on the day, compared to six for Bucknell. The Mountain Hawks also recorded just 21 hits, compared to 29 for the Bison.
Bucknell has now reached double figures in runs in three of its last four games and four of its last seven and outscored Lehigh 40-22 this weekend. The Bison are 5-2 over their last seven games.
Bucknell will wrap up its home non-league schedule Tuesday when it hosts Mount St. Mary's in a 3:30 p.m. game at Depew Field. The Bison will then travel to Penn State on Wednesday before finishing their regular-season campaign next weekend against Army at Depew Field. All four games of that series can be heard on WVBU 90.5 and SportsJuice.com.
