OLEAN, N.Y. – Bucknell men's tennis claimed its third straight victory, defeating St. Bonaventure 6-1 in Olean, N.Y., on Sunday afternoon. The Bison dropped just one singles match and one doubles match as they improved to 3-4 in duals this spring. The win over the Bonnies is just the fourth in 12 tries for Bucknell and the first since 2006. The victory five years came by a score of 4-3, but every meeting since then went 6-1 in favor of St. Bonaventure.
Bucknell opened play on Sunday with the doubles point after Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) won 8-4 at No. 1 and Scott Bernstein (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and Kyle Rosen (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) won 8-5 at No. 3.
Much like they did on Friday night against Niagara, the Bison took five of six singles matches to secure the win. Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) bounced back from a doubles loss to earn the first singles victory of the day. The sophomore won his third straight match with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Mikhail Sudakov at the third position.
Bucknell's third point came from Cohenca, who has emerged as the Bison's go-to player at the top of the lineup. The Bonnies' Chris Post played it close against Cohenca, but the Bison junior walked away with the 6-4, 7-6 victory that put his team within one point of the team title.
Malloy was the clinching match at fifth singles. The senior, who improved his career combined record to 102-52, did not allow a game to Oscar Yanez who was forced to retire trailing 6-0, 4-0.
Although of little consequence to the team score, Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) and Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) kept the success rolling with singles wins as well.
Several Bison moved up the program rankings with their performance at St. Bonaventure. Malloy's 102 victories is tied for seventh, while his 54 singles victories is tied for fifth all-time at Bucknell. He is also tied for ninth in doubles wins with 48. Cohenca is 17th in doubles wins with a career mark of 37-33. His 69-71 combined record puts him in a tie for 22nd.
Bucknell will try to keep its winning streak alive when it heads to Orlando, Fla., for its Spring Break trip. The Bison will face South Dakota State, Liberty, NJIT and Boston University March 14-18.
