LEWISBURG, Pa. - Four Bucknell swimmers wrapped up competition at the Indianapolis Grand Prix this past Friday and Saturday at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI. An eighth-place finish in the 400 IM on day one by freshman Mike Nicholson (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) highlighted the premiere three-day event for the Bison.
The final two days of the meet did not feature additional finals berths, but Nicholson, sophomore Billy Krause (Huntington Bay, N.Y./St. Anthony's), junior Eric Sokolosky (Branford, Conn./Branford) and freshman Kelly Pontecorvo (New Providence, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) swam in a number of prelims.
Nicholson was the busiest of the quartet as he finished 37th in the 200 fly (2:11.64), 35th in the 200 breast (2:26.84) and 31st in the 200 IM (2:11.54).
Krause just beat out Nicholson in the 200 fly, placing 34th (2:11.27). He also swam in the 200 IM and touched the wall 42nd (2:12.98) in the field of more than 80 swimmers.
A short-distance freestyle swimmer, Sokolosky was 35th (24.14) in the 50 free on Friday and 49th out of 118 in the 100 free on Saturday.
Swimming her second and third events of the meet, Pontecorvo posted a 56th-place finish (out of 79) in the 400 free (4:32.78) on Friday and followed that with a 34th-place showing in the 800 free (9:17.54).
The Indianapolis Grand Prix features a number of high-profile swimmers, including 16-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps and six-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte on the men's side and Olympians Katie Hoff, Kate Ziegler and Dana Vollmer on the women's side.
The meet was contested in long course meters, versus the shorter yards the Bison student-athletes are accustomed to from their regular seasons.
