OLEAN, N.Y. - Bucknell men's tennis claimed its second consecutive win, upending Niagara 5-2 in Olean, N.Y., on Friday night. After losing the doubles point, the Bison (2-4) rallied by winning the first four singles matches to clinch the victory. Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) became the ninth Bison in program history to reach 100 career wins with his straight-sets decision in singles.
Malloy defeated Jordan Tedesco-Blair 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 5 position. The senior is now 53-21 in his singles career and has a combined career record of 100-52. He is the first Bison to reach the century mark since former teammates Ryan Sandburg, who holds the program record with 150 victories, and Jonathan Brenner in 2009.
By the time Malloy had his win in the books, Bucknell had already clinched the team win. Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) claimed the first point with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Matthew Kane at No. 1 singles. Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK), Kyle Rosen (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) followed with straight-set wins to give the Bison a 4-1 lead and guarantee a favorable outcome.
Heading into singles play, Bucknell had put itself in a hole after winning only one doubles match. Katten and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) were the early victors, defeating David Lemieux-Sarrasin and Joseph Zelic 8-2 at No. 2.
Next up for the Bison is St. Bonaventure on Sunday. The match in Olean, N.Y., is set for 11 a.m.
