LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell senior defensive midfielder Jake Clarke (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) and junior attackman Charlie Streep (New Canaan, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) were two of the 59 men's college lacrosse players named to the Tewaaraton Award watch list on Friday. The Tewaaraton Award is presented annually to the national player of the year.
Clarke and Streep are two key players for a Bison squad that is ranked No. 17 in this week's Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll. Both were named Inside Lacrosse Preseason Third Team All-Americans back in December.
Clarke has been the First Team All-Patriot League faceoff man in each of the last two seasons. In 2010, Clarke won 61.7 percent of his faceoffs, which was a Bucknell single-season record and the second-best percentage in the nation, trailing only Tim Fallon of Hartford (.622). Clarke also ranked fourth nationally in ground balls per game (6.92), and his 83 total ground balls ranked second all-time at Bucknell, trailing only his own total of 98 set in 2009.
Clarke is already Bucknell's career leader in ground balls (205) and faceoff wins (315), and his .595 career faceoff percentage is also best in school history. In addition to his faceoff prowess, Clarke is also a top short-stick defensive midfielder for a Bison squad that is giving up only 6.0 goals per game so far in 2011.
While Clarke has excelled at the faceoff X and on the defensive side of the field, Streep has developed into a premier offensive performer. Streep, who has played both midfield and attack at Bucknell, was the 2009 Patriot League Rookie of the Year and a 2010 Second Team All-Patriot League selection.
He has four goals and two assists through three games this season after eclipsing the 30-point mark in each of his first two campaigns. Streep had 23 goals and 12 assists for 35 points in 2010 after logging 25 goals and seven assists as a freshman in 2009.
All watch list nominees are carefully screened and identified by two selection committees, one committee for the male athletes and another committee for the female athletes, which are comprised of college coaches. The watch list will eventually be whittled down three more times until the top 10 male and female Tewaaraton Award finalists are named in May. The 11th annual Tewaaraton Award will be presented on June 2, 2011 at the historical Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C.
Now 2-1 on the young season, the Bison will host Navy in a key Patriot League battle Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
