ORLANDO, Fla. – With Bucknell men's tennis deadlocked against Boston University, Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) clinched the four-hour, three-set victory to send the Bison to a 4-3 match win in Orlando, Fla., on Friday evening. Katten clinched with a pair of tiebreakers in the final two sets against Jarred Pendleton and gave the Orange and Blue its sixth win in seven tries.
Katten snapped a personal three-match losing streak with his battle on Saturday. After dropping the first set 6-2 to Pendleton, the sophomore needed a 7-5 decision in the tiebreaker. His third-set tiebreaker went much more smoothly as he did not allow a point to Pendleton. The final line score read 2-6, 7-6, 7-6 for Katten.
Earlier in the day, Katten and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) teamed up for a win at No. 3 doubles. The duo defeated the Terriers' Marcus VanBerkel and Alex Hallenbeck 8-5. With the two victories, Katten improves his career combined record to 53-43, which is tied for 35th all-time at Bucknell.
Morque and Katten were part of a doubles sweep for the Bison. Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) kicked things off with an 8-1 victory at the first position. The success puts Kovic in fifth all-time at Bucknell with a career doubles record of 53-53.
Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) followed with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
Putting Katten in position for the big win was Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) at sixth singles and Zimmer at second singles. Maxson was a quick winner over Hallenbeck, 6-1, 6-1. Zimmer had just as easy a night with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Kopelman.
Bucknell closes out its Spring Break trip in Orlando with a 3-1 record. The Bison will look to continue their run on March 22 when they host Mount St. Mary's.
