LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell men's tennis continued its hot play, defeating Mount St. Mary's 6-1 at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon. The Bison, which have won three straight contests, improve their spring dual record to 7-5 thanks to strong start that saw them sweep doubles play and continued with victories in five of six singles matches against the Mount.
After starting the season 0-4, Bucknell found its stroke and has been rewarded with wins in seven of its last eight matches. That is the second-most wins in the Patriot League so far this spring and trails only Navy's 14-9 mark. The Bison and the Midshipmen will face off on Sunday as Bucknell opens league play in Annapolis, Md.
Bucknell could not ask for a better start to the day opposite Mount St. Mary's. Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) cruised to an 8-1 win over Mike Salomon and Mike Zabetakis at first doubles. Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) had nearly as easy of a time at third doubles, defeating Taylor Place and Justin Olexa, 8-2.
Although finishing with a closer score, Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) also won at No. 2 doubles. The duo defeated Patrick Plastow and Andrew Marinucci by a score of 8-5. All three Bison doubles pairings are now working three-match winning streaks.
Things continued to go Bucknell's way in singles. The Bison had an easy time of it in each of their victories, winning in straight sets in the second through sixth positions. Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) did not allow a game at all to his opponent, winning 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot.
By claiming decisions in both doubles and singles, Malloy continues to climb the program record lists. He now has a career combined record of 110-54, ranking fourth all-time and becoming the fourth player to reach 110 victories.
Mount St. Mary's claimed its only win at No. 1 singles. Salomon defeated Cohenca, 6-4, 7-5 in the closest match of the day.
Bucknell will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Fairfax, Va. The Bison and George Mason will square off at 11 a.m.
