LEWISBURG, Pa. - Thanks to a Patriot League men's basketball title and top-three finishes for all four Bison track & field and swimming & diving programs, Bucknell has moved into first place in the race for the Patriot League Presidents' Cup. The Bison, who were in third place after the fall, have totaled 71.75 points, 9.50 more than second-place Navy. Bucknell also has the lead in both the Men's and Women's Cup standings.
Bucknell, which is aiming for its 17th Presidents' Cup in the 21-year history of the league, received 38 points from its six winter programs.
Presidents' Cup points are awarded based on a team's performance in the regular-season and postseason PL standings. In cross country, football, golf, swimming & diving, track & field and women's rowing, the points are awarded based on final Patriot League Championship team standings. In team sports with postseason tournaments, such as baseball, basketball, field hockey, soccer, lacrosse and volleyball, points are awarded based on the average finish in the league championship tournament and regular-season standings.
Behind Bucknell and Navy in the overall Cup standings are Colgate (61.25) and Lehigh (61.25), American (60.5), Army (54.75), Lafayette (33.75) and Holy Cross (29.5).
In the Women's Cup chase, Bucknell has 40.5 points, Colgate is second with 36.75 and American is third with 34. Army and Navy are tied for fourth with 32 points, followed by Lehigh (30.25), Lafayette (16.75) and Holy Cross (14.75).
The standings are a bit tighter on the men's side with the top three teams separated by just one point. Bucknell leads with 31.25 points, but Lehigh is a close second with 31 and Navy is right behind with 30.25. American (26.5), Colgate (24.5), Army (22.75), Lafayette (17) and Holy Cross (14.75) round out the list.
Bucknell, in 2009-10, won five spring championships and finished with 123.75 points, its second-highest total all-time. At this juncture last year, Bison teams had accumulated 73 points.
