LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball team swept the Patriot League weekly awards on Monday as Bob Donato (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) was named Player of the Week, Jack Boehm (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) was recognized as Pitcher of the Week and Colby Vanderbeck (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) earned Rookie of the Week honors. That trio led the Bison to a 2-1 record in a three-game weekend series at Richmond.
Donato, who leads Bucknell in batting average (.367), at bats (30), runs (8), hits (11), home runs (4) and slugging percentage (.800), is in the midst of the best power stretch of his career. He hit a home run in each of the weekend's three games and has now homered in four straight contests. The center fielder was 5-for-13 with three home runs, four runs batted in and five runs scored against the Spiders. He scored or drove in six of the team's 10 runs in the low-scoring series.
Boehm earned his honor after pitching five shutout innings of relief in game two of the series to lead the Bison to their first win of the year. The tall right-hander yielded just three hits, four baserunners and struck out three. No more than four Richmond hitters stepped to the plate in an inning against Boehm, who entered the contest with Bucknell trailing 3-2, but ended with the Bison on the right side of a 5-3 decision.
Vanderbeck, who was making his first career start, made headlines on Sunday with what proved to be the game-winning home run leading off the top of the ninth inning to break a 3-3 deadlock and propel Bucknell to a 4-3 victory. The left-handed Vanderbeck was 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the contest. He entered the game 1-for-2 on the season.
Bucknell (2-5) will head back down to Virginia this coming weekend to play a four-game series at VMI. First pitch for Friday's game one is 4 p.m.
