LORETTO, Pa. - Bucknell men's tennis ended a four-match skid, defeating Saint Francis (Pa.) 6-1 in Loretto, Pa., on Friday night. After earning the doubles point, the Bison (1-4) went on to take the decision in five of six singles matches.
The No. 2 doubles team of Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and the No. 3 duo of Scott Bernstein (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and Kyle Rosen (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) both won their matches quickly. Katten and Morque claimed an 8-2 victory over Youlian Natchev and Kirby Mendes. Bernstein and Rosen won in equally dominant fashion, 8-3 over Stephen Kowalski and Andres Rosa.
Rosen had a tougher time in his singles match, but the freshman still pulled out the victory. For the second consecutive outing, Rosen's match score was 7-5, 7-6. This time the Bison came out on top, however, with the win over Nathaniel Fleming at the third position.
A majority of the remaining matches went more smoothly for Bucknell. Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Natchev, Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Mt. Pleasant) won 6-0, 6-2 over Kirby Mendes and Chris Tortora (West Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) won after Rosa defaulted.
Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) cruised through his first set against Kowalski, 6-2. The senior then ran into some trouble in the second before walking away with the tiebreaker for 7-7. The win gives Malloy a 52-21 career singles record, ranking him in a tie for sixth all-time at Bucknell.
Elahn Pogue had a hand in both of the Red Flash's wins. The sophomore teamed with Fleming for an 8-7 victory at first doubles over Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex). Kovic was at the wrong end of the score against Pogue in singles. Despite Pogue earning the point with the 6-3, 6-4 win, Bucknell claimed its 11th consecutive match victory over the Red Flash.
Bucknell will be back in action on March 4 when it plays Niagara in Olean, N.Y. The match is set for 6 p.m.
