LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell sophomore Christian Treat (Evergreen, Colo./Clear Creek) was named the Patriot League Men's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league announced on Friday. It marks the second straight year, and fourth time in the last decade, a Bison has won the league's Scholar-Athlete award.
Additionally, Treat and junior teammate Thomas Brown (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) were voted to the inaugural 10-person Academic All-Patriot League Men's Swimming and Diving Team.
Treat follows 2010 Bucknell graduate Daniel Fletcher as the Scholar-Athlete. Overall, Bison have won the award seven times.
A Second Team All-Patriot League choice in each of his first two campaigns, Treat ranked 13th in the Patriot League with 44 points scored at last weekend's championship meet. He broke a 23-year-old school record in the 200-yard individual medley prelims and was part of the school-record breaking 400 free relay squad that recorded an NCAA "B" time.
On an individual level, Treat posted four top-five showings at the Patriot League Championships, finishing fourth in the 200 IM (1:50.33), fifth in the 100 breast (56.36) and fourth in the 200 breast (2:03.18).
Thanks to his performance last week, Treat now ranks in the top 10 in program history in four events. He stands second in the 200 IM (1:50.33), second in the 100 breast (56.36), fourth in the 200 breast (2:03.18) and 10th in the 200 free (1:41.45).
Away from the pool, Treat is an animal behavior major with a 3.77 grade-point average who has been on the Dean's List in each of his three semesters at Bucknell. The scholarship and social chair of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, Treat is president of Bucknell's animal behavior club. He has spent plenty of time volunteering, serving as a swim instructor for the Lewisburg Community Outreach Program, helping to clean up a local state park and with the Special Olympics.
Treat, who was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll as a freshman, has also participated in Swim Across America to raise money for cancer research and in an AIDS walk/run. He has also served as Key Club president and won the Kiwanis Key Leader Service Award.
Brown finished 18th in the Patriot League with 40 points at last weekend's championship meet. He earned his second career Second Team All-League citation after finishing second in the 100 back (50.16), third in the 200 back (1:48.95) and 10th in the 200 IM (1:52.41). The highlight of the meet for Brown was his school-record time of 1:48.04 in the 200 back prelims, while his 50.04 100 back prelim time placed him second on that list. Brown was also part of two relays that finished in the top three.
A 2010 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, Brown owns a 3.42 GPA while majoring in accounting. He posted an impressive 3.66 GPA during the fall 2010 semester.
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
The Academic All-Patriot League Team has been added for all sports in the 2010-11 seasons to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The Men's Swimming and Diving Academic All-Patriot League Team has 10 student-athletes.
Treat and Brown are both expected to be in action at this weekend's ECAC Championships in Pittsburgh, Pa.
