LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Molly Goebel (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) along with sophomores Anna Griest (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster School) and Elizabeth Porcellio (Fairport, N.Y./Penfield) were named to the inaugural 10-person Academic All-Patriot League Women's Swimming and Diving Team, the league office announced on Friday. The Bison tied American for tops in the league with three honorees.
To be eligible for the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor. The Academic All-Patriot League Team has been added for all sports in the 2010-11 seasons to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field.
Goebel and Porcellio each earned her second individual award this week as both were named All-Patriot League on Wednesday.
A political science major with a 3.25 GPA, Goebel posted three top-seven finishes and recorded Bucknell's only individual title (50 free) at last weekend's Patriot League Championship meet at Kinney Natatorium. Her 46 points topped the Bison and ranked 13th in the league.
Goebel, a four-time All-Patriot League selection who holds the school record in the 50 free (23.20) and ranks in the top five for the 100 fly (56.31) and 100 free (51.29), was part of four relays at the championship meet and she helped each to new top-10 marks in program history.
Away from the pool, Goebel, a Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member who posted a solid 3.75 GPA last fall, serves on the nominations committee for Pi Beta Phi sorority, volunteers at The Haven Ministry and Harvest Soup Kitchen and teaches swim lessons for local children. Her semesters are filled with no fewer than 15 hours of community service.
Porcellio earned her second straight All-Patriot League honor earlier this week after piling up 41 points to rank 19th in the league. She finished fifth in the 200 breast, fifth in the 200 IM and sixth in the 200 free and was part of three relays that finished in the top half of their races. Highlighting the Patriot League Championships for Porcellio were the second-best times in school history in the 200 free (1:52.43) and the 200 IM (2:03.84). She also recorded a top-10 time in the 200 breast (2:19.88).
A Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member who owns a 3.72 GPA while majoring in neuroscience, Porcellio was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta Freshman Honor Society and an Idleman Family Scholarship winner. Additionally, she volunteers regularly at a local food bank and at Sunflower Day Care while also serving as the social awareness director for her sorority, Delta Gamma.
Griest scored in three events at last week's Patriot League Championships, finishing sixth in the 1,650 free (17:06.87), 11th in the 400 IM (4:33.67) and 14th in the 500 free (5:05.03). Her 22 points ranked 48th in the league, while her 1,650 free time moved her up to fifth in program history.
A member of the Dean's List every semester at Bucknell, Griest has a 3.72 GPA while majoring in management. She is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society and has served as an Orientation Assistant. Griest also facilitated a campus-wide care package drive for a local dog shelter in affiliation with a management 101 class and works as a University tour guide.
