LEWISBURG, Pa. - Seven members of the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team received All-Patriot League honors, the league office announced Wednesday. The Bison's seven selections ranked second in the league, behind only champion Navy's 19. The third-place Bison and runner-up Army each had two first-team selections, while the Mids led the way with 14 first-teamers.
Each of Bucknell's seven honorees will return next year as there were four juniors, two sophomores and one freshman recognized.
Freshman Mike Nicholson (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) and junior Eric Sokolosky (Branford, Conn./Branford) represented the Bison on the first team, while juniors Thomas Brown (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), Nathaniel Frye (Franklin, Pa./Franklin Area) and Matthew Segar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), as well as sophomores Billy Krause (Huntington Bay, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Christian Treat (Evergreen, Colo./Clear Creek), landed on the second team.
Six of the seven All-League selections had been previously honored, with only Nicholson, a freshman, making his first appearance on the list.
Both of the All-Patriot League teams are comprised of 18 student-athletes, although this year's second team had 20 due to ties. First-team status is automatically awarded to competitors who earn a first-place finish at the championship meet. The remaining first-team slots are filled by student-athletes with the highest remaining individual point totals from the meet. Second-team status is automatically given to all second-place finishers who do not otherwise have enough points to move up to the first team. The remaining second-team slots are then filled by competitors with the highest remaining point totals.
Nicholson earned first-team status due to his victory in the 400-individual medley in a school-record and NCAA "B" time of 3 minutes, 52.09 seconds at the Patriot League Championships. The win was the only individual title for the Bison during this past weekend's three-day meet. Nicholson also broke a 23-year-old school record in the 200 IM to finish third. Additionally, he claimed seventh in the 200 fly and earned 48 points in the meet to rank sixth in the league. He was the highest point-winner not from Navy and was the first Bison freshman to win a PL race since 2007.
Sokolosky was named first team for the second straight year as he was honored with an All-League award for the third consecutive season. The 2010 PL 50 free champion, Sokolosky landed on the first team thanks to earning 46 points during the league meet, tying him for eighth place. He recorded three individual top-four showings as he placed third in the 50 free, fourth in the 100 free and fourth in the 200 free. Additionally, he was part of four relays that placed in the top three, including the 400 free relay that set a school record in an NCAA "B" time of 3:00.87.
Each of the second-team honorees made at least their second appearance on the second team. Frye headlined the group with a third consecutive second-team citation after finishing fifth in the 200 breast, sixth in the 100 breast and 12th in the 200 IM last weekend as he finished tied for 29th in the league in points earned (32). He set new Bucknell top-10 times in all three events and also swam as part of the second-place 200 medley relay.
Treat, Krause and Segar each made his second straight second-team appearance after finishing in the top 25 in the league in points scored. Treat accumulated three top-five showings and briefly held the 200 IM record before Nicholson surpassed him, while Krause recorded three top-10 finishes, including a fifth-place showing in the 200 IM. Segar posted the second-best time in program history in the 500 free and had three top-10 finishes, including a bronze medal in the 200 free.
Brown missed the 2010 Patriot League Championships, but was a second-team honoree the last time the meet was held at Kinney Natatorium in 2009. He finished second in the 100 back, set a school record en route to a third-place finish in the 200 back and placed 10th in the 200 IM this past weekend.
Bucknell's third-place finish marked the sixth consecutive year the Bison have finished in the top three at the Patriot League Championships.
