LEWISBURG, Pa. - Five members of the Bucknell women's swimming and diving team earned All-Patriot League honors based on their performances at last week's Patriot League Championships, the league office announced Wednesday. The Bison's five selections ranked third in the league behind champion Colgate and second-place Navy.
Bucknell, which finished third at the championship meet, had two first-team honorees and three second-teamers. Seniors Molly Goebel (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and Macey Keath (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) were named to the first team, while sophomore Elizabeth Porcellio (Fairport, N.Y./Penfield) and freshmen Kelly Pontecorvo (New Providence, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) and Emily Wright (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) landed on the second team.
Each of the All-Patriot League teams is comprised of 18 student-athletes, although this year's first team had 19 due to ties. First-team status is automatically awarded to competitors who earn a first-place finish at the championship meet. The remaining first-team slots are filled by student-athletes with the highest remaining individual point totals from the meet. Second-team status is automatically given to all second-place finishers who do not otherwise have enough points to move up to the first team. The remaining second-team slots are then filled by competitors with the highest remaining point totals.
Goebel and Keath are no strangers to All-League awards as Goebel is now a four-time honoree, garnering first team honors in 2010 and 2011 and second-team plaudits in 2008 and 2009, while Keath is a three-time first-team selection.
Goebel was a first-team choice for the second straight year thanks to her first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle on the first day of the three-day Patriot League Championships, which took place this year at Kinney Natatorium. She finished with a team-high 46 points to tie for 13th in the Patriot League after concluding the meet with a seventh-place finish in the 100 butterfly and a fifth-place showing in the 100 free. Goebel, the school record-holder in the 50 free (23.20), was also part of four relays that posted top-10 times in Bucknell history.
Keath wrapped up her Patriot League career with three more individual top-five finishes to bring her career tally to nine. She was a four-time scorer in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 400 IM and finishing fifth, fourth and fourth, respectively, in those events this past weekend. With three top-five showings, Keath piled up 44 points, ranking second on the team and 16th in the Patriot League. Keath, the school record-holder in the 100 breast and 200 breast, was also part of the 200 and 400 medley relay squads that posted top-three finishes.
Porcellio landed on the second team for the second straight year after piling up 41 points to rank 19th in the league. She finished fifth in the 200 breast, fifth in the 200 IM and sixth in the 200 free and was part of three relays that finished in the top half of their races. Highlighting the Patriot League Championships for Porcellio were the second-best times in school history in the 200 free (1:52.43) and the 200 IM (2:03.84). She also recorded a top-10 time in the 200 breast (2:19.88).
Wright earned her second-team citation thanks to runner-up showings in the 50 free and 100 free. In the 50 free she finished only behind teammate Goebel and tied Courtney Warren for third on the program's all-time list. Wright also scored in the 200 free during the meet, helping her to contribute 39 points to Bucknell's cause.
Pontecorvo was strong in the longer distance freestyle events as she finished seventh in the 500 free, 13th in the 200 free and third in the 1,650 free during the Patriot League Championships. Her time (16:50.89) in the 1,650 free ranks second all-time at Bucknell, while her 500 free clocking of 4:56.71 is third in the record books.
With its third-place finish at the Patriot League Championships, Bucknell has now finished in the top-three at the league meet 11 consecutive years.
