LEWISBURG, Pa. - Thomas Brown (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefile) and the 400 free relay set school records and a total of four Bison posted individual top-five showings to highlight the final day of the Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships for the Bucknell men Saturday at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison finished third in the team standings, marking the sixth consecutive year they have finished in the top three at the league meet.
Navy won its eighth consecutive title with 1,056 points, while Army was second with 603.5. Bucknell was not far behind with 566, while Lehigh (380) and Colgate (363) were in a tight battle for fourth.
Brown's school record came in the 200-yard backstroke, an event in which he finished third, his second straight medal performance after a runner-up showing in the 100 back on Friday. Brown's prelim time of 1 minute, 48.04 seconds is the new school record. That mark is 1.03 seconds faster than the previous record held by Gonzalo DeLeon since 2009. Brown slowed down slightly in the finals, but still came in under 1:49.00 to earn the bronze medal.
Matthew Segar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), Christian Treat (Evergreen, Colo./Clear Creek), Trevor Reitz (Boynton Beach, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and Eric Sokolosky (Branford, Conn./Branford) - a quartet made up of a freshman, a sophomore and two juniors - posted an NCAA "B" time en route to breaking the school record in the 400 free relay. Their time of 3:00.87 beat the old record by .91 seconds and helped them finish second to Navy in the final event of the three-day meet.
Sokolosky also had success on his own as he posted a career-best mark of 45.02 in the 100 free prelims and followed with a fourth-place showing in the finals. The 45.02 ranks third on the program's all-time list, and it was his third top-five finish this weekend, following a third-place medal in the 50 free on Thursday and a fourth-place showing in the 200 free on Friday.
Treat also recorded a top-five finish for the third straight night and boosted his name up Bucknell's top-10 list in the 200 breast. His time of 2:03.18 led to a fourth-place showing and moved him from sixth to fourth in program history in that event. Treat was fourth in the 200 IM on Thursday and fifth in the 100 breast on Friday, rounding out his list of top-five placings this weekend.
Nathaniel Frye (Franklin, Pa./Franklin Area) was Bucknell's fourth top-five finisher on Saturday as he crossed the line fifth in the 200 breast in a time of 2:03.19, just .01 seconds behind Treat in a tightly contested race that saw the third through fifth finishers separated by just .15 seconds.
Overall, nine new school top-10 marks were recorded on Saturday.
Bucknell will continue its season next weekend at the ECAC Championships.
