LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell Athletics Hall of Famer Jim Harvey held the 200-yard individual medley record for 23 years. Christian Treat (Evergreen, Colo./Clear Creek) broke that two-decade-old mark in Thursday morning's Patriot League Championships prelims, but held it for just a handful of hours as teammate Mike Nicholson (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) surpassed it in the finals. Thanks to five new program top-10 times in the 200 IM, the Bucknell men's swimming and diving squad stands second in the team standings with 185 points, trailing only seven-time defending champion Navy (328 points).
Treat won the 200 IM in a record-setting time of 1 minute, 50.39 seconds, surpassing Harvey's standard by .27 seconds. However, that record was short-lived as Nicholson, a freshman competing in his first Patriot League Championships meet, recorded a time of 1:49.75 in the finals to place third. Treat (1:50.33) and Billy Krause (Huntington Bay, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (1:51.42) were close behind in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Overall, five new 200 IM top-10 marks were set by Bison on Thursday. Nicholson (1:49.75) ranks first, Treat (1:50.33) stands second, Krause (1:50.96 - prelims) is fifth, Thomas Brown (1:52.41) is sixth and Nathaniel Frye (1:53.36) is ninth.
Nicholson now ranks in the top two in Bucknell history in three events (200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM).
Nicholson was not the only Bison to walk out of Kinney Natatorium on Thursday night with a new school record as sophomore diver David Magaro (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro Area) smashed the previous three-meter diving standard held by Adam Freeman since 2006. Magaro placed fourth off the three-meter board with a finals score of 343.55, nearly 42 points better than Freeman's previous record of 301.58. Magaro had already set a career best with a 296.10 in the prelims.
Junior Eric Sokolosky (Branford, Conn./Branford) rounded out the list of Bucknell top-five individual finishers on Thursday as he claimed third in the 50 free (20.52). He was just .03 seconds off his career best, and only .13 seconds shy of first-place Zach Ingold from Navy. Sokolosky was the defending 50 free champion and now has three top-five showings in the event to his credit.
Sokolosky, Treat and Trevor Reitz (Boynton Beach, Fla./Gulliver Prep) teamed up to help both the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay squads to second-place finishes and spots on the program's top-10 list. That trio was joined by Bryce Suchomel (Aurora, Colo./Regis) in the 200 free relay and they clocked a 1:22.34, the fifth-best mark in program annals. Brown joined the trio for the 400 medley relay and their time of 3:19.97 was just .36 seconds shy of the program standard set at the 2009 Patriot League Championships.
The Patriot League Championships will continue Friday morning with the prelims beginning at 10:30 a.m. The three-day meet runs through Saturday.
