ATLANTA, Ga. - Bucknell senior swimmer Matthew Segar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) recorded a U.S. Olympic Trials-qualifying time in the 200-meter freestyle Friday at the AT&T Winter National Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center. Segar was one of three Bison, along with sophomores Mike Nicholson (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) and Emily Wright (Wayland, Mass./Wayland), to swim at the competitive meet the last two days.
Segar earned his Olympic Trials-qualifying time in Friday's 200 free prelims as he finished 29th in a 97-swimmer field with a time of 1 minute, 52.24 seconds. He was .75 seconds faster than the cut time of 1:52.89. The 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials will take place June 25-July 2 in Omaha, Neb.
The top 30 swimmers in the prelims of each event advanced to the evening finals. Segar swam in the "C" final of the 200 free and placed ninth with a time of 1:53.61.
A two-time All-Patriot League selection, Segar also swam in the 400 free on Thursday and finished 70th of 79, touching the wall in 4:09.95.
After finishing 81st of 100 in the 200 individual medley on Thursday, Nicholson had a strong performance in the 400 IM on Friday, placing 35th of 71 and just missing out on qualifying for the finals. He was only .66 seconds behind the 30th-place finisher.
