LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lafayette took a page out of Bucknell's book, scoring twice off set pieces in a 2-0 victory over the Bison Saturday afternoon at sunny Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. Bucknell finishes its season with a 7-9-2 record, while Lafayette (9-5-4) remains alive for a Patriot League Tournament berth. The Leopards need help from either Colgate or Army later in the day to grab one of the four playoff spots.
Kyle Scharfenberg scored both of Lafayette's goals on headers, one in the 17th minute on a corner kick and the other in the 66th on a free kick, giving him a team-high seven on the season. Sean Peckham assisted on both goals.
Lafayette came into the game allowing only nine goals in its first 17 games, and the Leopards were tough defensively again in this one. Bucknell had very few quality scoring chances, with goalkeeper Graham Heydt only required to make three saves. One of them was a dandy, however, as he dove to his left to turn aside an Andrew Powell (Charlton, Mass./St. John's) direct kick with 15 minutes to play in the second half.
Bucknell did finish with a 14-10 shot advantage, led by five attempts from Powell and three apiece from Brendan Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J./Pingry School) and Luke Joyner (Dallas, Texas/J.J. Pearce). Lafayette had only three shots on goal all day, but two of them went in the net.
All three Bison goalkeepers played in the game, with seniors Marc Hartmann (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephen's) and Tommy Caso (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh) splitting each half. Sophomore Orman Kimbrough (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park) made his debut just over two minutes remaining.
Seniors Powell, Joyner, Hartman, Caso, Ryan Sappington (Barboursville, Va./Shattuck-St. Mary's) and Nader Sawtarie (Bethany, W.Va./Linsly School) were all honored prior to their final collegiate contest. They will graduate as the third-winningest class in program history.
Bucknell was eliminated from postseason contention last week and will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2008. The Bison had won each of the last two Patriot League titles.
