ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Freshman Stephanie Koziol posted three top-five finishes and diver Katie Hetherington won the one-meter diving competition as the Bucknell women's swimming and diving team opened the Patriot League portion of its schedule Saturday with a quad meet at Navy against the host Mids, American and Lafayette. The Bison posted a 2-1 record at the meet, defeating American (226-71) and Lafayette (242-57), while losing to Navy (160-129).
The meet was conducted in non-traditional long course meters. The majority of Bucknell's meets this year will focus on race lengths in yards. Navy won 10 of the first 11 swimming events before Mids starting swimming exhibition in some of the meet's later events. Bucknell and Navy combined to win 14 of the 16 events with American earning victories in the 50 free and three-meter diving.
Koziol concluded her day with a victory in the 200 IM, leading a 1-2-3 Bison sweep in the final results. She also finished third in the 200 fly and fourth in the 200 back. She was Bucknell's top finisher in each event.
Hetherington earned the only victory for the Bison in an event that did not feature Navy swimming exhibition when she scored a 240.65 off the one-meter board, more than 10 points ahead of the runner-up. Bucknell's Tori Molchany finished fifth and Morgan Popple seventh. Hetherington then placed second off the three-meter board, followed by Molchany one spot behind. Hetherington now has five first-place and one second-place showing in three meets this year.
Sophomore Emily Wright had a strong day as well, finishing second to American's Leah Breen in the 50 free and third in the 100 free. Wright was also part of the top Bison 400 medley relay team that placed third and the 400 free relay that earned a gold medal in the meet's final event.
Freshman Emily Norton, who was part of the 400 medley relay with Wright, nearly matched her as she finished second in the 100 breast and fourth in the 200 breast. Another freshman, Meg Lattimer, was right up there with Norton, placing fifth in the 100 breast and third in the 200.
Bucknell (3-1) finished up with four total victories with sophomore Kristen Purdy rounding out the list of winners with a first-place showing in the 100 fly.
Kelly Pontecorvo (2nd in 800 free) and Elizabeth Porcellio (3rd in 200 free) also had solid meets.
Bucknell will be back in action in two weeks when it hosts the three-day Bison Invitational Nov. 18-20 inside Kinney Natatorium.
