LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore guard Cameron Ayers (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) of the Bucknell men's basketball team has been named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week. Ayers helped lead the Bison to a 4-0 record last week, including the "championship" of the Lewisburg Subregional of the TicketCity Legends Classic, and he earned Tournament MVP honors in the process.
Ayers has started every game this season at the point guard position, and he also plays off the ball when freshman Steven Kaspar comes in the game. Ayers is off to a strong start this season and has committed only five turnovers while leading the team in minutes played at 30.4 per game.
He did not commit a single turnover in the three Legends Classic games at Sojka Pavilion over the weekend, as the Bison turned back Princeton (62-56), West Alabama (87-50) and Morehead State (54-50). Like Bucknell, Princeton and Morehead State were both NCAA Tournament teams a year ago.
Ayers scored a career-high 20 points in the rout of West Alabama, connecting on 7 of 10 shots from the floor and 4 of 5 from 3-point range in only 24 minutes of action. One day later he was the star of Bucknell's close win over a Morehead State team that defeated Louisville in the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Ayers completed Bucknell's rally from 10 points down with a game-tying 3-pointer in the second half, and then with just 1:47 to play he hit a tiebreaking three that gave the Bison the lead for good. Top top it off, Ayers hit both ends of a 1-and-1 with 15 seconds left, stretching a three-point lead up to five.
Ayers is one of four Bison currently averaging in double figures (11.1) in the scoring column, and he is shooting 49.1 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from 3-point range and 80.0 percent from the free-throw line. He has also been a key defensive performer on a team that is holding opponents to just 59.4 points per game.
The Bison have won five straight games to improve to 5-2 on the season, and they will face another reigning NCAA Tournament Team in George Mason on the road on Wednesday night. That game will be televised live on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network at 7 p.m.
